Delivering on Our Commitments
The Portal is designed to encourage harmonization within the UN and it is expected that more UN agencies and their associated partners will join the Portal in the near future.

The Portal also represents the efforts of UNHCR, UNICEF and WFP to implement the commitments of the 2016 World Humanitarian Summits Grand Bargain to reduce duplication and management costs and enhance partnerships with local and national actors.

UNIGO membership is open to individuals, agencies and organizations engaged in peacekeeping research, education and training. Participants in the annual conference will be considered current UNIGO members.

Participation in a UNIGO annual conference is intended to include management or staff of organizations with responsibility for the education and training of individuals or groups preparing for peace, crisis response or humanitarian operations – military, police, civilian, joint or academic; or who are engaged in research activities related to such education and training; or who hold positions of responsibility in such education, training and research in governmental, international and regional organisations, UN agencies, or NGOs with a demonstrated interest in peacekeeping training.”

During the UNIGO Executive Committee meeting in November 2013, the group considered the issue of UNIGO membership. Attendance at the eleven Annual Conferences to date (2013-2015) has varied significantly, mainly due to the theme of each conference. The 2013 conference, for example, focused on Civil-Military Cooperation Training (CIMIC) and therefore attracted, in addition to staff from various training centres dealing with this issue, many CIMIC experts from various organisations and military headquarters around the world. In addition to a variable annual attendance, many past participants have been individuals representing governments or institutions, with little or no interest in membership, but rather in discussing the topic of the moment.

The Executive Committee, as a result of discussions in 2013, proposed to the 2013 Annual General Assembly that the Secretariat continue to maintain a database of attendances over the years; that all institutions providing education and training in peacekeeping operations be automatically considered members of UNIGO, and that there be a formal membership of UNIGO; i.e. an established list of organisations and individuals. Those attending the annual meeting will be considered to include current UNIGO members and will therefore be able to participate in the members’ session at the annual meeting to consider matters of management and development of UNIGO.
